When an Edinburgh villa goes up in flames, grumpy DI Russell McCord is called in to investigate. Someone died in the fire, and it looks like murder.

His spirits are lifted, however, when sassy magazine journalist Amy Thornton shows up, eager to solve another case.

The victim, Victoria Norval, was the owner of a marketing company. Her final days were marked by highly erratic behaviour. And the night before she died, she announced her intention to file for divorce.

Naturally, McCord’s suspicions fall on the husband, but Amy finds others might have wanted Norval gone, including a secret lover and two step-children.

A battle of wits with a family full of schemers ensues. Who will win?
